The City of Newburgh, New York is located on the Hudson River, about 90 miles south of Albany. The estimated population as of 2000 is 28,259 people. Once a shipping and industrial hub, Newburgh's waterfront now offers fine dining, scenic river views, and loft housing in converted factory spaces. Newburgh was settled in 1709, a century after Henry Hudson's explorations along the river. By 1865, Newburgh had become a prosperous industrial city, producing and transporting a range of goods over the next century that included textiles, baking powder, steam boilers, lawnmowers, ships, bricks, candles and automobiles. The American Felt and Filter Company, founded in 1899, is still in operation, making nonwoven filter media. The textile factory of Newburgh Steam Mills, established in the 1830s, went on to house the Coldwell Lawnmower Company, and finally Regal Bag Corporation before its recent closure. An 1884 iron foundry also housed a succession of companies, including Newburgh Ice Machine & Engine Company, before its current incarnation as luxury apartment spaces. Despite a post-WWII building boom, Newburgh suffered through the recessions and ill-considered urban renewal programs of the late 20th century, but has seen some economic growth in recent years.
