Maspeth, New York is a neighborhood of the borough of Queens in New York City. Maspeth, with a population of approximately 34,000, maintains the feeling of a small town despite its long history of manufacturing. Maspeth was largely agricultural through the 18th century, though tailors, wheelwrights, weavers and other craftsmen had set up shop by 1720. After the American Revolution, bridge and road improvements increased population and traffic to Maspeth. In the mid 19th century, industry developed around Newtown Creek, drawing businesses such as Alden Sampson & Sons, who built a new plant in 1861 to produce printed oilcloth floor coverings, and the Laurel Hill Chemical Works. At about the same time, a new law was enacted halting further burials in Manhattan, prompting the establishment of several cemeteries in Maspeth, boosting traffic to the area, and encouraging growth in the florist industry. In the late 1920s, Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation acquired the former chemical works, and operated a copper smelting and refining operation there until 1983. Although the 90 buildings that made up the complex have since been demolished, the land remains mostly undeveloped due to toxic contaminants in the soil.
