Long Island City, New York

Long Island City is a neighborhood of New York City, in the borough of Queens. Often referred to as L.I.C., Long Island City was incorporated as a separate city from 1870 until 1898, when it was annexed into New York City. Although the area is continuously undergoing redevelopment and gentrification, Long Island City also has many landmark 19th-century buildings, and the faded remains of painted signs advertising long-vanished businesses can be seen on many of them. Long Island City has an active contemporary arts community, with exhibition spaces such as MoMA PS1, 5Pointz, and SculptureCenter showcasing works ranging from graffiti art to sculpture.

Long Island City was formed by the 1870 merger of Astoria and several hamlets of Newtown Township. In 1898, the city was absorbed by New York City, becoming the largest neighborhood in the borough of Queens. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, L.I.C. was a bustling manufacturing center, producing a wide variety of goods, from bricks and sugar to Swingline staplers and Chiclets chewing gum. Prominent area landmarks include the Pennsylvania Railroad Company powerhouse, built in 1909 by architects McKim, Mead & White, and the Eagle Electric building, with its slogan "Perfection is not an accident." The baking and filmmaking industries have both found homes in L.I.C. The former Silvercup Bread Bakery is now a film studio. In 1912, the Loose-Wiles Company opened a bakery to produce their Sunshine Biscuits. The largest bakery in the world until 1955, the Sunshine building currently houses LaGuardia Community College. Famous Player-Lasky Studios, established in 1920, made films for the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1942-1971. After an idle spell, the studios are back in use as Kaufman-Astoria Studios. Troma Studios also makes its home in Long Island City.
