Lockport, New York
The City of Lockport, New York, is located approximately 18 miles east of Niagara Falls. The Erie Canal passes through the city over a series of step locks that gives Lockport its name. Although the canals are no longer used for commercial transport, in the summer months history cruises run daily through the double locks built in 1918. The original 1825 "Flight of Five" locks, which run parallel to the double locks, are now used only as spillways, but may be restored as historical attractions. Other local attractions include underground boat and cave tours, a marina, antique shops and art galleries.
The original settlers of Lockport belonged to the Society of Friends, or Quakers. Speculating that the Erie Canal would likely be routed through the property, the Friends bought and cleared the land in 1816 and built a meeting house and homesteads. The locks were completed in 1825, and many of the Irish and Scottish canal workers remained in Lockport. In 1840, the village had tanneries, flour and cotton mills, a glass works, cooperage and numerous small businesses. In 1860, the Holly Manufacturing Company began producing fire pumps, and provided fire protection systems for the city before closing in 1904. Lockport was formally incorporated in 1865. The early 20th century brought new industry, with Simonds Saw & Steel Company and Harrison Radiator Corporation opening plants in Lockport. Harrison Radiator became a division of General Motors in 1918, and then of Delphi Corporation. With GM's emergence from bankruptcy in 2009, Harrison is once again a GM company. Simonds Saw & Steel sold their plant in 1978 to a Pennsylvania company, which closed the Lockport property in 1983. Part of the site is now occupied by an Allegheny Ludlum specialty metals plant. In recent years, Lockport has actively worked at preserving its historical sites and developing tourism.
