Hudson, New York

Hudson is a city located along the Hudson River in Columbia County, New York. Hudson's current population of about 7,500 occupies a 2.3 square mile area. Once a prominent merchant city, Hudson has survived several economic slumps to develop a thriving antiques trade, with much of its activity centered around the historic Warren Street district. Hudson is also home to the FASNY Museum of Firefighting. Established in 1923, the museum and its expansions house a significant collection of firefighting equipment, documents and memorabilia, dating back to the earliest days of organized firefighting.

Founded in 1662 on a spur of land between two bays on the Hudson River, Hudson began as a port city, settled by New England whalers and merchant men who quickly established warehouses, ropewalks and shipping concerns. Hudson's maritime trades prospered, and it was incorporated as a city in 1785. The decline of whaling and the advent of the railroads in the early 19th century transformed Hudson from a mercantile to an industrial city, as businesses such as the Harder Knitting Company, C.H. Evans & Sons brewery, and the Allen Paper Car Wheel Works contributed to manufacturing growth. Hudson's industrial success attracted less savory businesses as well; by the early 20th century, Hudson was equally well known for its vice trades. The New York State Training School for Girls was established in 1904 as a cottage-system institution for delinquent girls between the ages of 12 and 16 - the only one of its kind in the state. Prohibition and decline in cement manufacturing and other industries contributed to economic loss through the 1970s, but in recent decades, Hudson has reinvented itself as an arts and cultural center, and population loss has begun to reverse.

Hudson's twin histories of manufacturing and architectural reuse put it into a high risk category for asbestos exposure.
