Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York

Incorporated in 1832, Buffalo is a city in New York State. Located at the head of the Niagara River on the east end of Lake Erie, Buffalo is the seat of Erie County, and has an estimated population of 270,919. Once a major manufacturing, shipping and railway hub, Buffalo today has a service-oriented economy, and a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Buffalo is also home to several colleges and universities, including the State University at Buffalo, and Canisius College. The city's diverse architectural legacy includes a wide range of Victorian and modern styles, represented by designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Albert Khan.

Buffalo originated in 1789 as a trading community. After successfully campaigning to become the western terminus of the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, Buffalo quickly developed into a transportation and industrial center. Steel and grain-milling were among the dominant industries in Buffalo. The Buffalo Forge Company, established in 1877, built forges, blowers, machine tools and pumps, a tradition carried on today by Howden Buffalo. The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company, founded in 1878 as a manufacturer of birdcages and household goods, became famous for the luxury automobiles it built from 1901 to 1938. At the turn of the 20th century, the new hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls provided electric light and power, inspiring the nickname "the City of Light." Buffalo factories turned out hundreds of products and inventions, from Cheerios (General Mills) to jetpacks (Bell Aerospace), and by 1950, Buffalo was the 8th largest manufacturing city in the nation. Like much of the Northeast, however, industry and population in Buffalo declined after World War II, and the city has worked to redirect its economy. Banking, higher education and genetics research are among Buffalo's top employment sectors today.
