Astoria, New York

Astoria is a neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City. First settled in 1659, Astoria has developed from a quiet farming village, to a summer resort for Manhattan's captains of industry, to a bustling immigrant neighborhood of commercial businesses. Today, although there is some disagreement as to its precise boundaries, Astoria is a lively multi-ethnic community, known for its Greek and Middle Eastern restaurants. Astoria is also home to Astoria Park, and the Museum of the Moving Image, and several movies have been filmed on location here.

For much of its first 150 years, Astoria, then known as Hallet's Cove, was rural pasture and farmland. Beginning in the early 19th century, Manhattan's wealthy began building elegant summer mansions here, attracted by the open vistas and cool East River breezes. Astoria was named for John Jacob Astor, who invested in the neighborhood, although he never lived there. Later in the 19th century, Astoria saw an influx of German immigrants, including the founders of the Steinway & Sons piano company. In addition to the piano factory, the family established several other businesses, as well as a company town, known as Steinway Village, to house and educates company employees. Astoria merged with several other villages in 1870 to create Long Island City, which was incorporated by New York City in 1898. The Queensboro Bridge, completed in 1909, allowed for greater commercial development in the area. Familiar products manufactured in Astoria include Ronzoni macaroni, Hellmans mayonnaise, Swingline staples and Pierce-Arrow motorcars. Although many of the larger industries have moved elsewhere, Astoria is home to many small commercial businesses, as well as LaGuardia Airport, which occupies the site of a former amusement park. The Astoria Generating Station, which began operating in 1962, still produces power for a sizeable section of New York City.
