Gallup, New Mexico

Gallup is a city in and seat of McKinley County, New Mexico which occupies a total area of 13.4 square miles. With an estimated population of 20,209, Gallup is the most populous city between Albuquerque, New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona. Founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the city was named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. Gallup is often referred to as the "Indian Capital of the World", due to its location in the heart of Native American lands, and the presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi and other tribes. The Navajo are recognized for their wool related products such as rugs and blankets; the Zuni are regarded for their turquoise and coral jewelry; and the Hopi are best known for their polychrome pottery. With approximately one-third of its population having Native American roots, Gallup is significantly impacted by Native American cultures.

In Gallup’s early days, it was a typical rough-and-ready frontier settlement, with a number of saloons, false store fronts, wooden sidewalks and a single road paralleling the railroad tracks. The economy of the emerging city was largely supported by coal mining in the region. In fact, Gallup was for a time called "Carbon City. During the 20th century, however, there have been numerous mine closures. As a result of these closures, Gallup has a large socioeconomic poor population. Gallup is the tour hub for the popular Four Corners Region, and it is the mercantile, transportation and banking center for the entire area.
