Woodbridge, New Jersey

Woodbridge Township is the oldest original township in New Jersey, settled in 1664. Located in Middlesex County between the Raritan River and Arthur Kill, Woodbridge has a population of 99,585 residents. Once a center for brick manufacturing, Woodbridge Township has a diverse mix of residential, commercial and industrial areas as well as a variety of historic structures. Woodbridge Township was officially incorporated in 1798. Woodbridge's rich clay deposits generated its earliest industries. By the mid-19th century, clay was being shipped out in large quantities to companies such as the Federal Seaboard Terra Cotta Company in Perth Amboy, and by the late 19th-century, a number of Woodbridge companies were producing their own firebrick, tiles and pottery goods. The Salamander Works, which became known for its Rockingham stoneware, began production in 1825, and operated in Woodbridge until the early 20th century, when the company moved to Trenton. Other brick manufacturers included M.D. Valentine Brick Company, the James E. Berry fire brick factory and Hampton Cutter & Sons, founded in the 1840s. In 1957, Hess, Incorporated built its first refinery in the Port Reading area of Woodbridge Township, and added a fluid catalytic cracking unit in 1961. Now known as Hess Corporation, the company also has regional headquarters in Woodbridge. As manufacturing has declined somewhat in recent decades, Woodbridge has attracted financial, retail, and other professional service businesses.
