Wayne, New Jersey

The township of Wayne is located in Passaic County, New Jersey. Founded in 1695 as part of New Barbadoes, Wayne Township currently has a population of about 54,000 residents in an area of just over 25 square miles. Largely residential today, Wayne experienced a boom in industrialization during World War II, leading to an increase in home construction as well. Post-war decline in manufacturing has led to an increased focus on service-sector industries such as higher education and banking. Notable employers include roofing materials manufacturers GAF Corporation, William Paterson University, and Valley National Bank.

Wayne became a separate township in 1847. For most of the 18th and 19th centuries, Wayne was a rural agricultural community. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century made access to New York City more convenient, and Wayne became a popular summer resort. Wartime manufacturing provided a boost to industrial development. The E.I. DuPont de Nemours Company acquired the Laflin & Rand Powder Company in 1902. DuPont's Pompton Lakes Works produced black powder for explosives during World War I and II, and eventually ceased manufacturing operations in 1994. Chemical manufacturers American Cyanamid moved their corporate headquarters to Wayne in the 1960s, where it remained until the 1990s. International Specialty Products, Inc., another chemical company, is still based in Wayne. The Union Camp Corporation operated a papermaking facility in Wayne from 1956 to about 2000, when the company merged with International Paper.
