Vineland, New Jersey

The city of Vineland is the largest city by area in New Jersey. Located between the Maurice and Manumuskin Rivers in Cumberland County, Vineland occupies a 69 square-mile area and has a population of just over 60,700. Established in 1861 as a planned agricultural community, Vineland later developed industrially as well. Today, Vineland retains a substantial amount of farmland and residential areas; industry has declined, with most manufacturing concentrated along city's outer edges, to the west and south. Agricultural and food products still play a prominent role, with top employers including Aunt Kitty's Foods (founded as Venice Maid Foods in 1929), Omni Baking, and Progresso, founded in 1942 and now a division of General Mills.

Vineland was founded by Charles K. Landis along an established railroad route, with the intent of creating a progressive, agriculturally-based community. Despite being a dry town, Vineland's farms were initially devoted to the cultivation of grapes. In 1869, Thomas Bramwell Welch perfected a method of making an unfermented grape juice drink, which he marketed to local churches as a wine substitute. The Welch's Grape Juice Company was born, and flourished through the Great Depression, when the company relocated to New York. Today, Welch's is headquartered in Concord, Massachusetts and the original factory site is occupied by a police station. During the first half of the 20th century, poultry became a dominant industry in Vineland, in part due to the Vineyard Poultry Laboratories' successful vaccine for fowl pox, which greatly reduced farmers' poultry losses. Although the poultry farming has declined, other industries are still active. The DeRossi & Son clothing Company, founded in 1926, is currently turning out new dress uniforms for the Army.
