Sayreville is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Occupying 18.75 square miles along the Raritan River where it flows into Raritan Bay, Sayreville has a population of just over 42,700. Founded in 1703 and once known for its chemical factories and brickyards, Sayreville today incorporates healthcare, professional services, and technology industries into its economic mix. Typical employers include cosmetics manufacturer Orlane, Inc., specialty pharmaceutical company Trigen Laboratories, and food packaging company Sabert Corporation.

One of Sayreville's first buildings, the Morgan Inn, was built in 1703, overlooking Raritan Bay. The Raritan River provided clay for one of Sayreville's earliest industries, the Price Pottery, founded in the late 18th century. In 1850, the newly-formed Sayre & Fisher Brick Company made use of the clay deposits, becoming the world's largest brick maker by the early 20th century. Although the Great Depression brought a slump in brick-production, business boomed again during World War II. A central steam plant built in 1898 was incorporated as the subsidiary Sayreville Electric Light and Power Company, a forerunner of the Jersey Central Power and Light Company. The brick factory closed its doors for good in 1970. In 1900, the International Smokeless Powder and Dynamite Company opened a gunpowder factory. In 1904, it was acquired by DuPont, which continued making the nitrocellulose black powder. After World War I, DuPont found other uses for the chemical, producing automotive paints and movie film. At about the same time, Owens-Illinois began manufacturing Kaylo insulation in Sayreville. In 1953, the plant was converted by the Kimble Glass Company to manufacture television tubes. Other companies active in Sayreville in the 20th century include the Hercules Powder Company, Quigley Company, and Brookfield Glass Company.
