Perth Amboy, with a population of approximately 47,000, is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Located on the north shore of Raritan Bay, Perth Amboy has been both a resort town and an industrial and shipping center. Perth Amboy takes its name from a combination of Algonquin and Scottish words, reflecting the city's early settlers. During the 18th century, Perth Amboy was an important link for travelers from New York to Philadelphia, and a ferry service to Staten Island operated until the 1960s. During the 19th century, the city developed several industries, including pottery, copper smelting and chemical manufacturing. In 1895, M. Guggenheim's Sons purchased a copper refinery in Perth Amboy. In 1901, the company merged with American Smelting & Refining Company (ASARCO), which operated the refinery until 1975. Early in the 20th century, the Lewisohn brothers established the Raritan Copper Works, which became a subsidiary of Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The Cheseborough Manufacturing Company, which originated Vaseline petroleum jelly, began manufacturing in Perth Amboy in 1881. Cheseborough merged with cold cream manufacturers Pond's in 1955, and was subsequently acquired by Unilever in 1987. The Perth Amboy factory, once the only producer of Vaseline in the world, no longer exists.
