Paulsboro, New Jersey

Paulsboro is a borough on the Delaware River in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Incorporated in 1904 from the combined communities of Paulsboro and Billingsport, present-day Paulsboro has a population of just over 6,000 residents. Over the years, Paulsboro has grown from a small farm town to a summer resort community, to a petroleum refining center. Notable employers include ExxonMobil Research & Engineering, the Paulsboro Refining Company of PBF Energy, and Hill Studio & Scenic.

Paulsboro grew slowly, and farming and fishing were the chief occupations until the end of the 19th century. From 1890 to 1906, Lincoln Park attracted summertime visitors with concerts, fireworks and other amusements. Wartime manufacturing and technological breakthroughs brought industrial growth in the early 20th century. The American Ammunition Company, which built a fuse plant in Paulsboro in 1915, was the first company to contract with Carrier Corporation for its new air-conditioning technology. In 1917, Vacuum Oil (later Socony-Vacuum Company) established a petroleum refinery which is operated today be ExxonMobil. Inventor Eugene Jules Houdry founded the Houdry Process Corporation in 1931 to develop his catalytic cracking process. With the help of Vacuum Oil, Houdry built a processing unit which enabled the company to manufacture high-octane aviation fuel during World War II. Aquatrols Corporation of America was founded in 1955. The company provides water services for landscaping, greenhouses and snowmaking. Petroleum refining continues to be a key industry in Paulsboro, although other manufacturing has declined somewhat.
