Paterson, New Jersey

The City of Paterson is the county seat of Passaic County, New Jersey. Located on the Passaic River, Paterson has a population of just over 146,000, making it New Jersey's third largest city. Founded in 1792, Paterson became a major textile producer, earning the nickname of "Silk City". Present-day Paterson combines manufacturing with education, healthcare and historical tourism. Among the city's top employers are St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Marcal Paper Products and William Paterson University.

The city of Paterson developed around the Great Falls of the Passaic River. Engineers created a system of waterways in 1794 to harness the power of the 77-foot high waterfall, which powered local mills until 1914. In 1835, Samuel Colt, a relative of one of those engineers, began manufacturing firearms in Paterson. The Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works built steam locomotives from 1832 until about 1913, maintaining storage facilities until the 1920s. Other notable items made in Paterson include Holland submarines and Curtiss-Wright aircraft engines. Silk textile manufacturing dominated Paterson industry from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century, with at least a dozen companies devoted to piece dyeing and finishing alone. Among the textile companies which operated in Paterson were the Puritan Piece Dye Works, Arrow Piece Dyeing and Finishing Works, Radiance Piece Dye Works, and the Cedar Cliff Silk Company. Although the textile industry is much diminished in Paterson, it retains a presence with companies such as Jeffrey Klein Ribbon Design, Inc. and Titan Textile Company.
