Passaic, New Jersey

Passaic is a city on the Passaic River in the state of New Jersey. Located in Passaic County, the city has a current population of approximately 69,700. Originally settled in 1678 by Dutch merchants, Passaic became a major textile producer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the scene of a significant labor strike in 1926. Today, though manufacturing has declined, Passaic's economic focus includes healthcare and other service industries. Notable employers include St. Mary's Hospital and the Hercules Chemical Company. The Botany Mills area is now a registered historic district.

Passaic in its early years was largely rural and agricultural. In 1861, a dam and canal were completed that would provide water access for trade and travel, and power for industry, particularly textile mills. The Botany Worsted Mills, established in 1887, became Passaic's largest employer. By 1893, Passaic boasted seven railroad stations, an electric street railway, and municipal gas, water, electric and sewer utilities. Textile mills operation by 1912 included Passaic Worsted Company, Garfield Worsted Mills, Dundee Textile, Gera Mills, and New Jersey Spinning Company, among others. When several workers at the Botany Mills were fired in 1926 for union organizing activities, more than 15,000 textile workers went out on strike. The walkout lasted more than a year, and did not fully resolve tensions between labor and the mill owners. Economic downturns severely affected the mills, many of which did not survive the Great Depression. Other industries fared somewhat better. The Okonite Company, which began manufacturing electric cable in Passaic in 1888, maintained its factory into the late 20th century. Raybestos-Manhattan operated a plant in Passaic from about the late 1920s to the early 1970s.
