North Bergen, New Jersey

North Bergen, founded in 1843, is a township in Hudson County, New Jersey. Located on the Hudson Palisades overlooking the New Jersey Meadowlands, North Bergen has a current population of about 60,700. Over the years, North Bergen has become a transit hub and gone from an industrial center to a more residential, retail and culture-oriented neighborhood. Vitamin Shoppe Industries, founded in 1977, is headquartered in North Bergen. Liz Claiborne, Inc., the Hudson Group and Palisades General Hospital are among North Bergen's largest employers.

North Bergen was incorporated as a township in 1843. During the second half of the 19th century, population growth led to increased urbanization. The western slope of the Hudson Palisades developed into a cemetery district, with more than half-a-dozen burial grounds and funerary businesses, still in use today. The oldest cemeteries include Grove Church Cemetery, established in 1847, and Machpelah Cemetery, founded in 1850, which also included a botanical garden designed by French botanist Andre Michaux. In 1907, the New York and New Jersey Cremation Company purchased a brownstone mansion known as Becker's Castle and remodeled it for use as a crematorium and columbarium. The facility currently operates as the Garden State Crematory. Industrial activity in North Bergen covered a wide range of industries in the early 20th century, with business including the Witherbee Storage Battery Company, Gibraltar Corrugated Paper Company, meatpackers Armour & Company and the Harry Schwartz Yarn Company. Owens Illinois opened a glass bottle factory in 1963. A White Castle restaurant built in the 1930s still stands in the Nungesser's neighborhood, near the site of the former Gutenberg Racetrack.
