Linden, New Jersey

Linden is a city in Union County, New Jersey. Located along the Arthur Kill opposite Staten Island, Linden is a suburb of New York City, and has a population of about 40,500 residents. Created in 1861 from portions of three other townships, Linden has long been an important port city, with a substantial history of industrial usage. Notable employers in Linden include ConocoPhillips's Bayway Refinery, Linden Bulk Transportation, and Pro Plastics Inc. Although many former large employers have left the city, Linden remains a transportation hub with an active industrial base.

Linden was settled in the late 17th century, and was a rural farming community until well into the 19th century. Typical early industries included saw and grist mills, iron foundries and brickyards. Railroad service was established around 1835. The Tremley Point area of Linden began to develop industrially in the 1870s with the arrival of the Russell Coe Bone Factory, a fertilizer manufacturer, and the S.S. Fales Chemical Company. The Standard Chemical Company was also established in the 1870s, and operated until its acquisition in 1889 by the Grasselli Chemical Company. In 1924, they became the Grasselli Dyestuff Corporation, and were acquired by the General Aniline Works (later GAF Corporation) in 1928. The heavy chemicals portion of the Grasselli complex was sold to I.E. Du Pont de Nemours Company. By the 1980s, GAF, DuPont, American Cyanamid and others had left the area, and the site was dormant and in need of environmental remediation. The Standard Oil refinery, built in 1908, expanded over the years, and is known today as the Bayway Refinery, operated by ConocoPhillips.
