Kearny, New Jersey

Kearny is a town on the Passaic River in the state of New Jersey. Located in Hudson County, and incorporated in 1899, Kearny is a suburb of Newark with a current population of just over 40,600. Scottish and Irish immigrants who came to work in Kearny's mills in the 18th century established a soccer-playing tradition that is reflected in the nickname, "Soccer Town, U.S.A." Once heavily industrialized, today about twenty percent of Kearny's land use is designated as industrial, with another twenty percent devoted to residential and commercial use; the remaining area is mainly wetlands overseen by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. Representative employers in Kearny include Gardner Asphalt Corporation, Owens Corning's asphalt roofing division, and Campbell Foundry.

First settled in the 18th century as part of an area named New Barbadoes Neck, Kearny was formed from part of Harrison Township in 1867. Factories soon followed. Two Scottish thread companies set up factories in Kearny area - Clark's Mile End Spool Cotton Company in 1878, and the Clark Thread Company in 1875. The mills brought a wave of British workers and businesses to Kearny. In 1883, the Marshall Flax Spinning Company opened its American operation, Linen Thread Company, which soon became the country's largest maker of linen thread. In 1886, the Nairn Linoleum Company, another Scots firm, began manufacturing floor and wall coverings in Kearny. In 1924, Nairn became Congoleum-Nairn Company following a merger with another flooring company. The early 20th century brought more industry. The Western Electric Company purchased a stretch of riverfront property in 1923 and by 1925 had built a huge manufacturing complex for electrical supplies. The plant was sold in the mid-1980s. Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company operated a shipyard in Kearny from 1917-1949, supplying vessels to the U.S. Navy.
