Jersey City, New Jersey
Jersey City is situated on a peninsula between the Hudson and Hackensack Rivers in northeastern New Jersey. Seven miles to the west is Newark, and across the Hudson River to the east is New York City's lower Manhattan skyline. Home to approximately 247,500, Jersey City is New Jersey's second-largest city and the seat of Hudson Country. Jersey City is a city of neighborhoods, many of which contain national historic landmarks. Among its most famous communities are Paulus Hook, Van Vorst Park, Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove, Bergen Hill, and Washington Village.
Jersey City was a dock and manufacturing town for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. Once touted as "the city with everything for industry," Jersey City still fulfills that slogan. A port of entry, with 11 miles of waterfront and significant rail connections, Jersey City remains an important transportation terminus and distribution and manufacturing center. Service industries have played a prominent role in the redevelopment of its waterfront and the creation of one of the nation's largest downtowns.
