Elizabeth, New Jersey

The city of Elizabeth is the county seat of Union County, New Jersey. Located on Newark Bay south of Newark, Elizabeth has a population of nearly 125,000, making it New Jersey's fourth most populous city. In the 19th century, Elizabeth was an active manufacturing city. Today, transportation and service industries are more prominent. The Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal is one of the busiest shipping ports in the world. Representative employers include Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Medesco, LLC and ConocoPhillips's Bayway Refinery, which is partly located in Elizabeth.

Founded in 1655 as Elizabethtown, the City of Elizabeth was formally incorporated in 1855. One of the city's earliest industries was I.M. Singer & Company, which built a sewing machine factory in Elizabeth in 1863. During World War II, Singer manufactured artillery and bomb sights for the U.S. forces. Although the Elizabeth factory closed in 1982, singer is still a well-known manufacturer of sewing machines. Automobile manufacturing was another prominent Elizabeth industry. In 1895, the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company was founded, followed in 1899 by the Riker Electric Vehicle Company. Other vehicle manufacturers active in Elizabeth in the early 20th century included Vandewater and Company, Duesenberg Motors Corporation, the Chrysler division of the Willys-Overland Company. Submarine manufacturers Electric Boat Company also got their start in Elizabeth in 1897 at the Crescent Shipyard. Electric Boat is now headquartered in Groton, Connecticut. In recent decades, Elizabeth has developed more retail and mixed business use areas, including the Jersey Gardens outlet mall and Elizabeth Center retail park.
