East Orange, New Jersey

East Orange is a city near the Passaic River in New Jersey. Located in Essex County, East Orange is bordered by the city of Newark on two sides, and has a population of about 64,200. East Orange was incorporated from parts of the town of Orange in 1863, and became a city in 1899. Copper mining was one of East Orange's earliest industries, but today healthcare, financial services and retail make up the city's largest economic sectors. Wells Fargo and East Orange General Hospital are among the typical employers. East Orange is part of an Urban Enterprise Zone which provides incentives to develop local business.

East Orange grew slowly until the late 19th century, when trolley services made commuting to industrial jobs in Newark and Orange more convenient. East Orange’s first apartment building, the Hamilton, was constructed in 1911 and is still in use today. Both World Wars were followed by increased housing construction, much of it apartment buildings. Inevitably, some industry came to East Orange as well. With Thomas Edison's laboratory in nearby West Orange, other electrical industries settled in the area. The early 20th century saw the establishment of companies such as the Howard Miniature Lamp Company, Tung-Sol Electric's semi-conductor division, and the White Adding Machine Company (est. 1912). Industrial manufacturers included E-Z Product Manufacturing Company, which produced filters, and valve manufacturer Zolleis Manufacturing Company. The Ward Baking Company opened a factory in 1916. It operated until 1979, and has been renovated into the Bakery Village apartment complex. Schering Corporation moved its U.S. pharmaceutical operations to East Orange in 1933. Schering merged with Merck, Inc. in 2009. In recent years, manufacturing has declined in East Orange, with service-related industries becoming more prominent.
