Clifton, New Jersey

Clifton, incorporated in 1917, is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey. Settled in the late 17th century and formerly known as Acquackanonk Township, Clifton today has a population of just over 84,000 residents. Over the years Clifton has transitioned from quiet dairy farming community to "New Jersey's fastest growing city" in the early 1950s. Acres of tract housing sprung up amid Victorian farmhouses, and new businesses and residents alike converged on the city. Clifton today has a diverse economic base, encompassing manufacturing, aerospace, textile, telecommunications and other industries. At the time of its incorporation, Clifton had been a rural agricultural village, relying on the Morris Canal, built in 1820, to transport goods and people. During the 20th century, competition from the railroads, and later, cars, made the canal obsolete, and it was drained in 1924. Early manufacturers included Fritzsche Brothers, which moved its chemical business to Clifton around 1900. The company made fruit flavorings and fragrances until the late 20th century. Another flavor and fragrance company, Givaudan SA, opened a factory in Clifton's Delwanna section in 1924, producing cheese and other flavorings until its closure in 1997. Other chemical companies active in Clifton during the mid-20th century include Hoffman-LaRoche, Miles Chemical Company and Takamine Laboratory, Inc. During World War II, the Curtiss-Wright Propeller Division turned out propellers for Navy helicopters. Post-World War II also saw a construction boom, as new housing developments were built to meet the growing city's needs. While manufacturing has declined somewhat in recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize Clifton's downtown shopping area.
