Cherry Hill, New Jersey

Cherry Hill is a township on the Cooper River in Camden County, New Jersey. Located just south of Philadelphia, Cherry Hill has a current population of 71,000. Cherry Hill was first settled in the late 17th century, and was formally established as Delaware Township in 1844. As a former farming community and a commuter suburb of Camden and Philadelphia, Cherry Hill has sought to balance industrial, commercial and cultural activity with open space and pleasant residential neighborhoods. Notable employers include Lockheed Martin, T.D. Bank, N.A. and Subaru of North America. Cherry Hill is also home to the Cherry Hill Mall, the first indoor mall in the eastern United States, built in 1961.

Cherry Hill was largely rural and agricultural until the late 19th century, with some of the local produce supplying the Campbell Soup Company in neighboring Camden. In the 20th century, the two World Wars brought a boom in housing development, and the construction of entertainment venues such as the Garden State Park racetrack and the Latin Casino. Radio Corporation of America built a laboratory and office complex in 1954 on the site of the present-day Hillview Shopping Center. The RCA facility was used to test televisions, and later for radar testing. A promotional ad from the mid-1960s lists several local businesses, including Berman Steel Company, Hussman Refrigerator Company, and Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Company. Victory Refrigeration, a former Hussman subsidiary, moved its headquarters to Cherry Hill in 1989.
