Carteret, New Jersey

Carteret is a borough on the Rahway River in New Jersey. Located in Middlesex County, Carteret sits across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island, New York, and has a population of just over 22,800. Originally incorporated in 1906 as Roosevelt, the borough was permanently renamed Carteret in 1922. Carteret is part of an Urban Enterprise Zone designed to encourage business development within the borough, which has experienced economic decline in recent decades. Notable employers include beverage manufacturers Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, petroleum terminal services provider Kinder Morgan, Inc. and Paragon Packaging.

Carteret's waterfront location made it an important transportation hub in the early 19th century, with ferries providing access to New York City, and roadways leading to other New Jersey towns. Despite this, Carteret remained largely a rural agricultural community into the early 20th century. An extension of the Central Railroad of New Jersey offered convenience for travelers and brought new industry to Carteret. Fertilizers were the first major product, produced by companies such as Williams & Clark Company, Armour Company and Consumers' Company. In 1891, the Wheeler Condenser & Engineering Company acquired an existing iron works. A merger in 1927 with Power Specialty created the Foster Wheeler Corporation, which manufactured steam generation equipment at the Carteret plant until the 1960s. The Delamar Copper Refining Works was established around 1901, and was succeeded by the United States Metals Refining Company, which operated the plant until its closure in the mid-1980s. Other early 20th century concerns included Warner Chemical Company, Mexican Petroleum Company and Klipstein Dye Works. Heavy industry has declined in recent decades, although Carteret maintains some manufacturing, in addition to logistics and service-related industries.
