Camden, New Jersey

Camden is a city on the Delaware River in the state of New Jersey. The county seat of Camden County, Camden has a current population of about 77,300. First settled by the Dutch in 1626, Camden is home to one of the country's oldest universities, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, which was founded in 1766. Camden became heavily industrialized in the late 19th century, and declined at the end of the 20th century. In recent years, the city has sought to attract more high-tech and scientific research firms. Current notable employers include Campbell Soup Company, which is headquartered in Camden, Coriell Institute for Medical Research and Magnetic Metals Corporation.

Camden's earliest industry was the fur trade, which benefited from ferry access to Philadelphia, directly across the Delaware River. Camden was incorporated as a city in 1828, and chartered its first railroad in 1830, opening up access to New York City and attracting new residents and commerce. By the end of the 19th century, Camden had several iron foundries, chemical plants, textile and dye mills and a canning factory. The New York Shipbuilding Company, which began operating in 1900, employed as many as 40,000 workers at its peak, and produced more than 500 naval vessels before it closed in 1967. The Victor Talking Machine Company, later RCA Victor, began manufacturing phonographs and phonograph players. When the company was acquired by General Electric in 1986, the city of Camden built a new high-tech facility for the company, in exchange for the historic RCA buildings, several of which have been converted to apartments. GE later sold the new buildings to Martin Marietta Company, and today they are occupied by a spin-off company, L-3 Communications.
