Nashua, New Hampshire

Nashua is the second largest city in the state of New Hampshire. The current population is estimated at 87,566. Once a major railroad hub and textile manufacturing city, Nashua is now home to defense contractors and high-tech companies such as Hewlitt-Packard and Oracle Corporation. The Daniel Webster Highway near the Massachusetts state line is heavily commercialized, with many shopping centers, including the Pheasant Lane Mall. Though not a typical college town, Nashua is home to Daniel Webster College and five other campuses, including branches of Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire Universities.
Nashua was originally part of the Massachusetts town of Dunstable, which was divided when the two states separated. Dunstable, New Hampshire was incorporated in 1746 and renamed in 1836. The town was located at the juncture of the Nashua and Merrimack Rivers, and in its early years established itself as a riverport for the fur trade. The completion of the Middlesex Canal in 1802 made transport of goods and raw materials to Boston much easier and opened the way for industrialization. Established in 1823, the Nashua Manufacturing Company built cotton mills, a canal and a machine shop, as well as Nashua Village, a tenement community to provide housing and services for the mill employees. Other factories sprang up, including iron foundries, locksmiths, locomotive and machinery manufacturers. Six major railroad lines traversed the city by the end of the century. Two world wars sustained the factories for a time, but the textile mills faltered with the Great Depression. A period of economic decline followed, which began to reverse in the 1960s and 1970s as high-tech and electronics companies moved to the city, and older companies developed new product lines. One such was the Nashua Corporation, a former paper products company which began manufacturing floppy disks for computers.
Nashua's repeated cycles of industrialization and construction place it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos cancer.
