Concord, New Hampshire

The city of Concord is the state capital and seat of government of New Hampshire. Located on the Merrimack River, Concord has a population of just under 42,500. Concord's State House, built in 1819, is the oldest such building in which the legislative branches still meet in their original chambers. The University of New Hampshire School of Law, founded in Concord in 1973 as the Franklin Pierce Law Center, is the state's only law school. The Concord Steam Corporation, established in 1938, provides steam generation services for more than 100 area businesses, including hospitals and government offices.

Concord was settled between 1725 and 1727, and incorporated as the town of Rumford in 1734. The town was renamed Concord in 1765 following a boundary dispute. Agriculture was the town's earliest industry, as the Merrimack floodplain's rich soil made good farmland. Sawmills, gristmills and other business needed to support a growing town were established, and the city flourished. By the early 1800s, Concord boasted two jewelers, a cider-mill, bookshops, a printshop, tanneries, taverns and hotels. By 1875, furniture, quarry granite and textiles were principal products. In 1894, the Concord Land and Water Power Co. (later Concord Electric Company) built a dam at Sewell's Falls and established the first three-phased electrical plant. Severe flooding in 1895 left twelve feet of water in the power plant, but the dam held fast. Concord has seen some decline in industry in 20th century, and the economy has turned towards the health care and insurance fields. New Hampshire State Hospital, founded in 1838 as a cottage-plan asylum for the mentally ill, now uses only a portion of its campus. The historic buildings and grounds are being considered for restoration as a government office park and other facilities.
