Found on the western bank of the Missouri River, Nebraska City is the county seat of Otoe County and the oldest incorporated city in the state of Nebraska. Official exploration of the area occurred in 1804 when Lewis and Clark journeyed west along the river and in 1846, the U.S. Army built Old Fort Kearny. Today, Nebraska City is known as the home of the internationally celebrated Arbor Day, as well as the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Center.
Nebraska City experienced major development in 1852, when John Boulware constructed a ferry house at the site of a well-developed river crossing and ferry service. The ferry service traveled from Iowa to Nebraska City, and led the city to becoming the site of a slave market. By the middle of the 19th century steamboats crowded the Missouri River, bringing commerce and growth to Nebraska City. The area’s favorable position, which included a gradual slope from the river to the table land above and established trail, made it a significant link to the west. Nebraska City had matured into the transportation, economic, and agricultural hub for the tri state area.
