Lincoln, Nebraska

The city of Lincoln is the capital and second largest city in the state of Nebraska. The city was named after President Abraham Lincoln and became the state capital on March 1st, 1867, upon admission into the Union. Since its founding Lincoln’s community has grown to a population of over 255,000, due in part to the presence of the University of Nebraska. Aside from the university, Bryan LGH Medical Center and the healthcare industry serve as the city’s largest employers.
Lincoln began as a farm-based economy and remained one up until the Great Depression of the 1930s. During this time many farmers were unable to meet mortgage payments and lost their property, and after scientific methods advanced, farmers started to become larger and fewer. Despite the agricultural decline, Lincoln’s economy remained stable as the development of oil fields stimulated growth. Other Lincoln organizations such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Nebraska Boiler Company, Lincoln Air Force Base, and Ray Martin Company helped diversify the area. Today, Lincoln remains one of the leading agricultural states, with cattle, corn, hogs, soybeans, and wheat among top products. Manufacturing and tourism also play an important role in the city’s continued prosperity.
