Trenton, Michigan
Trenton, a city in Wayne County, occupies 7.3 square miles in the southeastern portion of Michigan. Home to over 20,000 citizens, Trenton is part of Downriver, a collection of mostly blue-collar communities south of Detroit on the western bank of the Detroit River. Trenton is bounded by Grosse Ile to the east, Riverview to the north, Brownstown Township to the west and south and Woodhaven to the west. Founded in 1834 as Truaxton, the city received its present day name in 1850, and incorporated as a city in 1857. Through the late 1880s Trenton, like several downriver communities, was a bustling river town known for its extensive shipyards. Trenton's location along the Detroit River continues to be an invaluable asset, offering water recreation and future industrial and commercial expansion.
Presently, there are approximately fifteen manufacturing establishments in Trenton which produce an array of products including cement, plastics, steel, chemicals, gasoline, fuel oils, and boats. The former McLouth Steel plant is also located in Trenton.
