Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven is a city in Michigan located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Grand River. Incorporated as a city in 1867, Grand Haven has a population over 10,400; it serves as the county seat of Ottawa County and is part of the Holland-Grand Haven Metropolitan Area.

The city dates it’s founding to French settlers and a fur-trading outpost called Gabagouache. The trading post was later taken over by business tycoon, John Jacob Astor and the American Fur Company and became a hub of economic activity in the area. In the mid-to-late 1800s, Grand Haven developed into a logging, lumber mill and shipping area, as well as a shipbuilding center. During the early 1900s, Grand Haven was as a manufacturing hub for the area producing everything from automobiles to car parts to furniture to lighting and pianos. Grand Haven was home to The Story and Clark Piano Company from 1900-1984. Today, the city is an active resort, boating, fishing, and port community, which boasts over 100 miles of bike trails, a state beach, boardwalk, two lighthouses, a pier, a large charter fishing fleet, and a Great Lakes port, where it imports limestone, slag, cement and coal while exporting sand.
