Located in Wayne County, Michigan, the city of Ecorse is one of the oldest municipalities in the county. The settlement was established by French residents in 1836 and named Grand Port; it remained unincorporated within Ecorse Township. In 1902, the settlement incorporated as the village of Ecorse, the second largest village in the United States, at that time. Ecorse became a city in 1942.
Ecorse’s ideal location for shipping along the Detroit River, coupled with significant investment in rail and road infrastructure, the city of Ecorse urbanized and became a regional industrial center. Ecorse became a significant economic force in the region when its first steel mill, Michigan Steel Mill, began operation in 1923. The Great Lakes Steel Mill followed in 1929. Industrial development and resulting residential and commercial development grew steadily from 1929 and reached a high point during World War II. Most recently, Ecorse has become a first-ring suburban community closely connected to the city of Detroit as well as other “Downriver” communities through West Jefferson Avenue.
