Battle Creek, a city in northwest Calhoun County, Michigan, is located at the confluence of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Rivers. It is the principal city of the Battle Creek, Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area, and home to more than 50,000 residents. The Battle Creek Sanitarium (which is now the Battle Creek Federal Center building), remains as one of the tallest buildings in Battle Creek and is a historical marker to the city as well as to the state of Michigan.

The village of Battle Creek began as a market and mill center for prairie farmers. By the last part of the nineteenth century, the city developed into a major industrial center supplying a variety of goods, including agricultural machinery, steam pumps, violin strings and newspaper printing presses, to markets around the world. Notable companies at the time included Nichols and Shepard Company, Union Steam Pump, and Duplex Printing Press Company. Today, Battle Creek, known as the "Cereal City", is the home of Kellogg Company’s world headquarters. It is also the home of Post Cereals, which was at one point part of General Foods Corporation, then Kraft Foods, and is now part of Ralcorp. Other major corporate members of Battle Creek’s community include Denso Manufacturing, II Stanley Company, and Duncan Aviation. The city is revitalizing downtown to accommodate food science and other innovation industries.
