Albion incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city in 1885 and quickly became a mill town as well as an agricultural market. Also, a railroad line arrived in the mid-1800s, fostering the development of other industries. The presence of many major manufacturers since the 19th century has given Albion the reputation of a factory town. However, this changed with the closure of several manufacturers in the 1970s. More recently, Albion's culture has been changing to that of a college town with a strong focus in technology and sustainability issues.
