Watertown, Massachusetts

The Town of Watertown is located on the Charles River adjacent to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1630, Watertown has a current population of about 32,500. Watertown's neighborhoods range from busy industrial parks to quiet, tree-lined residential streets, with easy access to nearby Boston and Cambridge. Watertown has a large Armenian population, which has established the Armenian Library and Museum of America, as well as specialty shops and restaurants. Notable landmarks in Watertown include Mount Auburn Cemetery, a beautifully landscaped 19th-century garden cemetery, and the Watertown Arsenal, a former United States armory which now houses shops, businesses and a performing arts center.
Watertown was first settled by Europeans in 1630, but the area was inhabited much earlier. The land around the Charles River was fertile, and the river provided a falls for water power, and an annual migration of alewife and herring, which still takes place each spring. Sir Richard Saltonstall and his group of settlers quickly established a grist mill and woolen mill, and the area around Watertown Square continued to develop industrially. Horses and cattle were an important early commodity. Watertown became more manufacturing-oriented in the 19th century. The Bemis factory, established in 1807, produced sail cloth. Other small mills made soap, candles, paper, medicines and dyes. The Watertown Arsenal, begun in 1829, operated as a munitions storage and materials research center until 1968, before being redeveloped for commercial use. The Stanley brothers began producing their Stanley Steamer motorcars in 1897. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Watertown was popular with rich Bostonians, who built summer homes to escape the city heat. Watertown today is largely a commuter suburb, with most businesses in the retail, healthcare and restaurant industries.
