Sandwich, Massachusetts

The Town of Sandwich, approximately 57 miles south-southeast of Boston, is the oldest town on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The seaside community of 23,000 residents is located on Cape Cod Bay, with the Cape Cod Canal dividing the northern part of Sandwich from the rest of the town. Sandwich, like most Cape Cod towns, is largely residential and relies on tourism for much of its economic base. Summer visitors may stroll the charming town center, lined with art galleries, book and antique stores or enjoy Sandwich's beaches, state conservation lands, and museums.

Sandwich was settled in 1637, and incorporated in 1639 by settlers from Saugus. Early settlers took up agriculture and fishing, taking advantage of the town's seaside location and geography of low hills, ponds and forest. Some industry developed along the Scusset River and Old Harbor Creek area, including the Dexter Grist Mill. In the early 19th century, local timber was readily available, enabling Deming Jarves to establish the Boston & Sandwich Glass Factory in 1825. After the Civil War, competition from glass factories in other states caused prices to decline. This, combined with a worker's strike in 1887, caused the factory to close its doors in 1888. The company was known for its wide variety of colored, pressed-glass tableware, and similar "Sandwich glass" pieces remain popular with collectors. In 1909, construction began on the Cape Cod Canal, which would connect Cape Cod Bay to Buzzards Bay, substantially shortening the shipping route from New York City to Boston. In 1966, the Canal Electric Power Generating Station was built to provide electricity to most of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. A portion of Otis Air National Guard Base is also located in Sandwich.
