Quincy, Massachusetts
The City of Quincy is part of the Metropolitan Boston area, and is located just south of Boston. John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, the second and sixth U.S. Presidents, were both born in Quincy, which is sometimes called the "City of Presidents." It is the 8th largest city in Massachusetts, with a population just over 91,000. Quincy is largely urban in character, although the Blue Hills Reservation state park occupies nearly a quarter of the town's land area.
English colonists established a settlement in what is now the Squantum neighborhood of Quincy in 1625.The land lent itself to farming, having been previously cleared by the local Wampanoag Native People, and Quincy was originally incorporated in 1630 as part of Dorchester. Several changes of status followed, with Quincy ultimately being incorporated as a town in 1792, and a city in 1888. Early industries in Quincy included stonecutting, granite quarrying and an iron furnace. The Granite Railway was the first commercial railroad in the country, built in 1826 to transport granite from the quarry to the Neponset River. Quincy's location on Quincy Bay made it an important shipbuilding city as well. The Fore River Shipyard, established in the 1880s by Thomas H. Watson, built sailing ships first, then went on to turn out hundreds of Navy fighting ships and cargo carriers during WWII. The yard was purchased by General Dynamics in 1964, producing first naval ships and then commercial tankers before closing in 1986. Quincy also was home to one of the nation's first airfields, Dennison Field, which remained active into the 1950s as part of Squantum Naval Air Station. Other successful Quincy businesses include the Howard Johnson's and Dunkin' Donuts franchises.
For much of the 20th century, Quincy was prominent in the shipbuilding industry, a trade known for its heavy use of asbestos-containing building and insulation materials.
