Peabody, Massachusetts
Peabody is a city in Massachusetts, located along the Ipswich and Waters Rivers in the Boston suburban area known as the "North Shore." Incorporated in 1916, Peabody’s current population is approximately 53,000. Peabody is known as the "Leather City" for its once-prominent tanneries, and in 2009 opened the Peabody Leatherworkers Museum, dedicated to preserving and displaying the city's industrial past. Peabody also has several historic districts and properties, including Brooksby Farm, a working farm surrounded by 17-century homes. A country club, bike trails, and the Northshore Mall are also popular attractions.
Peabody was originally settled around 1626, as part of the town of Salem. In 1752, it was incorporated as part of Danvers. Peabody eventually broke off from Danvers, and in 1868 was officially incorporated as a town. Like many Massachusetts towns, Peabody began as a farming community, with the small mills needed to sustain the town developing around the rivers and streams. Grist and sawmills came first, followed by a glassworks, fulling mill and tannery. In the late 18th century, a thriving pottery industry existed, producing a distinctive type of redware. The pottery industry declined in the 19th century; only one company, Paige Pottery, survived into the mid- 20th century. The leather industry then took center stage in Peabody. By 1855 there were 27 tanneries, and by 1919, Peabody boasted 91 businesses dedicated to leather processing and goods. The Great Depression, fires, and labor struggles devastated the industry, and today the Travel Leather Company is the city's only remaining tannery. In the 20th century, Peabody has worked at developing other businesses such as early auto maker Corwin Manufacturing Company. Northshore Shopping Center, built in 1958, was the largest mall in New England at the time. Centennial Park is home to several medical and hi-tech companies.
