New Bedford, Massachusetts

New Bedford is a city of approximately 91,000 residents on the south coast of Massachusetts. New Bedford has a long tradition of shipbuilding and whaling, industries that made it at one time the richest city per capita in the world, and the most prominent whaling port. Although the whaling trade ended in 1925, commercial fishing is still an important revenue source for New Bedford, and its historic downtown and waterfront district, now a national park, preserves the city's maritime history and encourages tourism. By 1805, a bank and several marine insurance companies had sprung up to support the growing whaling trade. In 1857, the New Bedford fleet's annual catch yielded $10 million dollars. Two years later, however, petroleum was discovered in Pennsylvania, and the whale population was severely depleted. The whaling trade declined, but the textile industry was ready to take up the slack. Wamsutta Mills opened in 1849; eleven more mills followed. When the last whaling ship set out in 1925, New Bedford was one of the largest producers of cotton textiles in the country. After World War II, textile manufacturing slowed as manufacturing moved to the Southern states, but garment making continues into the present day and is still a significant economic factor in the community. In the late 20th century, tourism has grown in New Bedford, and the New Bedford Business Park provides a home for such companies as Polaroid, Johnson & Johnson and American Flexible Conduit.
