Natick, Massachusetts
Natick is a small town near the center of the MetroWest region of Massachusetts. Located 15 miles west of Boston, Natick has a population of 32,170 and a lively mix of residential, commercial and historical areas. Easy access to Boston via Route 9 and I-90, as well as MBTA commuter rail, make Natick a popular residence for Boston and Cambridge workers. Natick has several retail shopping areas, such as the Natick Collection and Sherwood Plaza. In addition, BJ's Wholesale Club, MathWorks and other corporations are headquartered here.
Natick was first settled in 1651 by John Eliot, a Puritan missionary who established a plantation community for Christianized Massachusett Indians, who became known as Praying Indians. With their help, Eliot produced the first Bible written in the Algonquian dialect. Natick residents, both English and Indian, fought in the American Revolution, and the town was officially incorporated in 1781. Initially, Natick was a farming town. Shoemaking began as a cottage industry in 1830, moving to a factory-based industry in 1858 with the invention of the sewing machine. The sewing machine also made possible improvements in the manufacture of baseballs, and H. Harwood & Sons opened the first baseball factory in 1858. Natick's shoe industry peaked in 1880 with twenty-three factories; by 1928, the number was half that. Natick's last shoe plant, Winchell Shoe Factory, closed in 1971. The shoe business brought such related industries as wainwrights and box manufacturers. In 1904, the Black Diamond Saw Company was founded to make bandsaws and filing machines. The Carling Black Label brewery operated from 1956-1975, to be succeeded by Prime Computer and Boston Scientific. The Winchell factory was converted to condominiums in 1988. Post-WWII, Natick experienced a residential building boom, resulting in several neighborhoods of tract housing which are still popular with residents today.
