Medford, Massachusetts
Medford, Massachusetts is located on the Mystic River just northwest of Boston. Though settled in 1630, Medford was not incorporated as a City until 1892. The current population is close to 56,000 people. Tufts University, chartered in 1852, looks down over Medford from the top of Walnut Hill, one of the tallest hills in the Boston area. Medford is typical of suburban New England university towns, with a mix of pleasant residential neighborhoods and bustling downtown squares lined with shops and restaurants.
Medford began in 1630 as plantation land with a single owner, Mathew Cradock, the first Governor of Massachusetts. From 1637 to 1787, a bridge was built over the Mystic River which would be the main route between Medford and Boston until the mid-19th century brought the railroad and horse-drawn street railways. Medford, for most of its early history, was a quiet rural community. One early industry, brick-making, began in 1660, and lasted until 1930, when the New England Brick Company consolidated operations to its Cambridge plant. Shipbuilding took hold in the early 19th century, and by the 1850s, Medford employed one-quarter of the state's shipwrights. Medford's ten shipyards turned out merchant ships and clipper ships, and "Medford-built" became synonymous with quality. The Daniel Lawrence & Sons distillery produced fine rum until 1905. After 1880, Medford changed rapidly; the population boomed, modern utilities such as gas lighting, electricity and telephone arrived, and public services increased. With the help of benefactors such as P.T. Barnum, Tufts College expanded, admitting women in 1892, adding a law school in 1930, and becoming Tufts University in 1955. The Barnum Museum of Natural History opened on campus in 1884, where it housed Barnum's collection of animal curiosities until it was destroyed by fire in 1975.
