Mansfield, Massachusetts

The Town of Mansfield, Massachusetts is located southwest of Boston, near Providence, Rhode Island. Originally part of the town of Norton, Mansfield was incorporated as separate town in 1775. Mansfield currently has a population of approximately 22,000. The town encompasses five conservation areas, and the Comcast Center (formerly Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts) a popular outdoor amphitheater which holds live musical performances. Current businesses headquartered in Malden include luggage manufacturer Samsonite Corporation and Covidien, a maker of medical supplies.

Mansfield was first settled in 1658. The Canoe, Rumford and Wading Rivers run through the town, along with a number of brooks which feed the Taunton River. The rivers provided a suitable location for early industry, and by 1800, Mansfield residents had established a grist mill, iron works, munitions foundry, a manufacturer of tacks and nails, and a basketry. In 1811, Solomon Pratt built a cotton mill on the site of the grist mill, and several other cotton mills sprung up at about the same time. Other industries established before the Civil War included shoemaking and straw hats. The Chilson Furnace Company was established in 1853 and operated until 1918. Other businesses highlighted on a map from 1888 include G.E. Bailey & Sons Bakery, S.W. Card Manufacturing Co., makers of taps and dies, and two jewelry manufacturers, A.A. Harrington & Co., and D.S. Spaulding. Some Malden industries lasted into the 20th and even 21st centuries S.W. Card was purchased by Union Twist Drill of Athol in 1913 and operated until 1961. ADM Cocoa, which is slated to close in 2011, began as a chocolate factory established by Walter M. Lowney in 1903. Later, as Merckens Chocolate, the factory provided cocoa for Nabisco's Oreo cookies and other products. Some of Mansfield’s former industrial buildings have been renovated into lofts and apartments.
