Malden, Massachusetts
Malden, Massachusetts is a town of approximately 5 square miles located north of the Mystic River. First incorporated as a town in 1649, Malden became a city in 1882. Malden was recently named the "Best Place to Raise Your Kids" in Massachusetts by Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, in part for its more than 30 parks and recreation areas, including Middlesex Fells Reservation and Pine Banks Park. Many of Malden's neighborhoods are built on the Colonial plan of houses and churches organized around a common or crossroads. These "Squares" and many surviving examples of Victorian and early 20th century architecture contribute to Malden's charm, while the city's approximately 1800 businesses bolster its economic base.
Through the 17th and 18th centuries, Malden was sparsely settled, and most of its industry was devoted to agriculture and livestock. In 1787, a bridge over the Mystic River improved access to Boston and Charlestown, and encouraged the growth of businesses, including shoemaking and tin-plating. In 1803, William Barrett established a silk-dyeing business that would last through the 1920s. Barrett's Dye Mills was the largest employer in Malden through the first half of the 19th century. In 1845, the Boston and Maine Railroad was put through, and industry and population grew again. In 1853, Elisha S. Converse founded the Boston Rubber Shoe Company. Although a devastating fire in 1875 destroyed the company’s main plant, a larger factory with improved equipment was quickly built, and Boston Rubber Shoe remained Malden's largest manufacturing concern through the end of the century. In 1903, a fourth cousin of Elisha Converse founded the Converse Rubber Shoe Company, best known for creating the popular "Chuck Taylor All Star" basketball shoe. Recent construction in Malden includes the Malden Center MBTA Station and the restoration of the 1930s Art Deco Jenkins Auditorium at Malden High School.
