Lynn, Massachusetts
Lynn is the largest city in Essex County, Massachusetts, with a population of just over 89,000. Lynn is located on the Massachusetts Bay shoreline 9 miles north of Boston. Lynn's neighborhoods include manufacturing plants, parks and beaches, reflecting its dual history as an industrial center and an oceanside resort. Lynn was first settled in 1629 by colonists from nearby Salem, and incorporated a year later as the town of Saugus. The name was changed to Lynn in 1637 upon the arrival of the town's first minister, who came from King's Lynn, England.
Although begun as a farming community, Lynn quickly added tanneries and shoemakers to the town's industries, producing boots for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The extension of the Eastern Railroad in the 1830s encouraged the growth of the shoe industry, and by 1850 Lynn was one of the world's major producers of shoes and boots. An 1879 map of Lynn's industrial center identifies 31 shoe manufacturers, including Morgan and Dore, and B.F. Spinney & Company. Major fires in 1869 and 1889 served merely to clear the way for construction of new shoe factories. These factories created a demand for electricity, and many of Lynn's prominent industrialists invested in the fledgling Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1883. Their foresight paid off, as Thomson-Houston merged with Edison General Electric Company in 1892 to form the General Electric Company. At first, the company focused on producing small motors, electrical arc lamps and meters, switching to aircraft components and engines during WWII. The combined research efforts of GE and MIT led to the development of the first U.S. jet engine in 1942. As with many New England cities, the original industries which led to growth began to decline in the 20th century. In the 1970s and 1980s, fires destroyed many of Lynn's former shoe factories. Other vacant industrial buildings have been renovated into living spaces, attracting young professionals from neighboring Boston. Lynn continues to have a manufacturing presence with General Electric's aviation division, West Lynn Creamery, Sterling Machine Company and Durkee-Mower.
