The City of Lowell was incorporated in 1836. A planned manufacturing community, Lowell is the fifth largest city in Massachusetts, with a population of approximately 103,000. Lowell is situated at the juncture of the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, 30 miles northwest of Boston.

Lowell was named after Francis Cabot Lowell, the leader of the "Boston Associates," a group of industrialists who purchased land below the Pawtucket Falls to realize their vision of a city designed for industry. A dam was built at the top of the falls to create a large millpond, and a series of canals dug to distribute the water. The rapids at the base of the 32-foot falls generated power to run the looms and other textile machinery. To provide the vast labor force needed for the Boston Manufacturing Company, Boott Cotton Mills and others, young women were recruited from New England’s rural farm families. The "mill girls" lived in company-owned boardinghouses, with chaperones and strict regulations. By the 1850s, the Lowell mills produced enough yard goods each year to circle the globe twice. Lowell's manufacturing success continued into the early 20th century producing items that ranged from velvet to potato chips. Although new businesses such as the Lowell Insulated Wire company would be established, during the 1920s many companies moved their factories to the South, and the Great Depression deepened the decline. Military manufacturing during World War II provided a brief boost, but it was not enough, and by mid-century, the great mills fell silent. The arrival of high technology companies and a new focus on cultural development in the 1970s helped revitalize the city. Today, Lowell is home to several music festivals, a state university and a minor league baseball team. The Lowell National Historical Park preserves many historic mill buildings as textile and industrial history museums.
