The City of Haverhill, with a population of approximately 60,000, is located in northeastern Massachusetts on the New Hampshire border. Haverhill is one of the oldest communities in the state, and its roughly 36 square miles of land area have seen a number of uses over the years, from rural agrarian to urban and industrial uses. Haverhill was first settled in 1640 and incorporated as a city in 1870. Like many Massachusetts cities, Haverhill was first established as a farming settlement. The Merrimack and Little Rivers provided power for related businesses, such as sawmills and gristmills, and served as a foundation for further industrial development. Tanneries and boat yards followed in the early 18th century. In the 19th century, a shoemaking industry sprang up that would grow to provide one-tenth of the shoes manufactured in the United States. Haverhill was also known for its hat making industry. Other businesses included Pentucket Mills, a worsted wool manufacturer, and box makers C. H. Hayes and Haverhill Box Board Company. During the winter of 1882, an early morning fire swept through the city's mill district, destroying some 300 businesses. At the beginning of the 20th century, industry in Haverhill began to decline due to price competition. The Great Depression furthered the economic slide, and by mid-century, plans for urban renewal were underway. As a result, many of the city's historic 19th century buildings were demolished. In the 21st century, the central business district is gradually being revived, and several former mill buildings have been restored as apartments and condominiums. Many old buildings are still vacant, however, including the former Woolworth building on Main Street.
