Towson, Maryland

Towson is the county seat of Baltimore County, Maryland. An unincorporated community, Towson has a current population of just over 55,000 residents. Settled as a farming community in 1752, Towson soon became a center for trade and government. Today Towson is a largely residential commuter suburb of Baltimore. It is home to Stanley Black & Decker Corporation, as well as Towson University and Goucher College. Towson was primarily a rural, agricultural area until the early 20th century, although the late 19th century brought public water and electric services, and railroads. The Baltimore & Delta Railway Company arrived in Towson in 1882. Later reorganized as the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad, the "Ma & Pa" provided passenger service to Baltimore and York until 1954. Black and Decker Corporation was founded in 1910 as a small machine shop. Today, the Black and Decker division remains headquartered in Towson, following a merger with the Stanley Works of Connecticut. After World War II, Towson began to develop as a suburb of Baltimore, attracting more residents to the area. During the mid and late-20th century, Towson developed as a retail area, with several shopping malls, and independent retailers. In 1954, Baltimore's venerable Hutzler Brothers Company opened a branch of its department store in Towson. Designed to cater to shoppers driving in from other locations, Hutzler's was notable for its lack of street-level display windows. Hutzler's remained a fixture in Towson until the late 1980s.
