Hagerstown, Maryland

The City of Hagerstown is the county seat of Washington County, Maryland. With a population of just under 40,000, Hagerstown is the sixth largest city in Maryland. Founded in 1762 as Elizabethtown, Hagerstown is built around a series of limestone ridges which provided a distinctive building material for many of the city's historic buildings. Formerly an industrial and rail transit center, Hagerstown maintains a manufacturing base, with additional focus on retail, historical tourism and other service fields. Notable manufacturers in Hagerstown include CertainTeed Corporation, Rust-Oleum Corporation, and Sierra Nevada Corporation, makers of advanced aircraft electronics systems.

Hagerstown developed into a manufacturing center in the late 19th century, as the city became a nexus for five railroads, including the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Western Maryland Railroad. The Antietam Paper Company, which was founded in 1859, had rail access at one end, and a public storefront at the other. Antietam Paper operated until 1997, when it merged with a New York firm. Another company with its own rail siding was the M.P. Moller Organ Company. Moller Organ was incorporated in 1881, and by 1926 the facility had more than doubled in size and was the largest maker of pipe organs in the world. The company went out of business in 1992. The Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing Company produced military and commercial aircraft in Hagerstown from 1931-1984. The Pangborn Corporation moved to Hagerstown in 1904, and made metal products for aerospace and other uses until about 2007, when the company relocated to Georgia. Today both manufacturing and railroads are somewhat reduced in Hagerstown, which has been developing a more post-industrial economy.
