Frederick, Maryland

Frederick is the second largest city in the state of Maryland, with a current population of about 65,200. It is the county seat of Frederick County, and is located on Carroll Creek, a tributary of the Monocacy River. Settled around 1745, Frederick has transformed from an agricultural and mining center to a cultural and service-based economy. Top employers include the Fort Detrick army medical base, State Farm Insurance and Frederick Memorial Healthcare System. Frederick is also home to Hood College, founded in 1893, and the Maryland School for the Deaf, founded in 1868.

One of Frederick's earliest industries, apart from agriculture, was the manufacture of pig iron. The Catoctin Furnace was built in 1774, and eventually expanded to three blast furnaces. The furnaces operated until 1993, and the remains of the second furnace are now part of Cunningham Falls State Park. Mining grew in prominence in the early 19th century, with Frederick mines producing copper, limestone, marble, hematite and other useful minerals. A Baltimore & Ohio Railroad branch line increased access to local markets, and the Frederick Brick Works, Inc. was founded in 1891 to meet a growing demand for pavers and building materials. The company began carrying other construction materials, and it continues in business today, although it is no longer manufacturing bricks. The Palmetto Fibre Company, founded in 1890, became the Ox Fibre Brush Company, manufacturing scrub brushes until the mid-20th century. After World War II came a decline in manufacturing, and a growth in biomedical research centered on Fort Detrick. In recent years, Frederick has begun to focus more on retail and entertainment development.
